Are you responsible for providing courses for university staff? Trevor Day has helped many hundreds of staff to enhance the power and productivity of their writing. Trevor designs and facilitates tailor-made, writing-related courses for academic, administrative and other staff.

Here is a sample from the range of the half-day and one-day courses he offers:

Writing for publication / Getting published

Developing a strong publication record is often vital for academic and other professional success. Drawing upon his research and practice in empowering staff to improve the quality and quantity of their publication output, Trevor takes participants on a journey from which they emerge with a range of strategies, including:

• selecting peer-reviewed journals or other publications to meet their needs and aspirations
• contacting editors or publishers to increase their chances of successful publication
• writing their publication with specific purposes for a particular audience
• gaining constructive feedback from others
• monitoring their work through the publication process

Overcoming blocks to writing

For many professionals, challenges to writing include: lack of confidence, limited understanding of the writing process and what facilitates it, and difficulty managing writing amid other demands on time and energy. This course tackles these and other issues head on in a friendly, supportive and yet challenging workshop environment. Coverage includes:

• pinpointing strengths and weakness in current approaches to writing
• identifying blocks to writing and devising strategies to overcome them
• applying various approaches to writing, including free writing and generative writing to unlock writing
• devising action plans for forthcoming writing assignments

Writing for different audiences / Writing for the public

Many professionals are used to writing for readers within their organisation or for technical audiences. But what if they have to write for audiences with which they are unfamiliar? This course considers what participants need to do to successfully tailor their writing to new audiences. The course empowers participants to:

• identify their purposes in writing for new audiences
• determine the needs and qualities of their new audience
• tailor writing style, structure and format to their purpose and audience
• identify with their readership
• create a powerful coherent communication that works on many levels
• check whether they have succeeded
• apply a powerful planning tool for any important written communication

Reflective writing

University staff are expected to reflect on and improve their practice, whether for formal continuing professional development (CPD) or not. For professional accreditation staff may have to submit a portfolio of their work along with structured reflective commentaries, which may draw upon best practice from the literature. Doing so requires blending reflective and other forms of writing style.

This course gives your participants the opportunity to develop confidence in:
• writing powerful reflective commentaries that contribute to a portfolio of professional practice
• overcoming blocks to reflective writing
• writing reflective commentaries that elegantly reveal: the nature and challenge of professional practice; that they have responded constructively to challenges; and have provided evidence of what they have learnt as a result.

Trevor tailors courses to meet your needs, creating resources and using teaching/learning processes that are fine-tuned to your participants and the culture of your organisation.
